Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
E Karthick (25), private firm employee
Chennai: I am a BA economics graduate, born and brought up in Perungalathur. Though I have an elder brother who works as a home guard, his salary did not suffice for the needs of the family. So, soon after finishing my bachelors, I started to search for a job in the field of my education to support my family. While I was struggling to get a job, one of my neighbours helped me get a job in a machine firm. Though the job was not related to my field, I had to take it up owing to my family situation. However, now I am happy about my decision because I love to do this job. At the firm, we alter bike parts. Initially, the work was new for me as I did not have a background in the field. So, every day I went to the workplace in the morning and returned home only by 8 pm. I started to learn new things at the job and gained knowledge on the workings of the shop. I am confident that this knowledge will help me in the future. At present, I am working hard to get an appraisal. I have many dreams and I hope that I will soon fulfill all of them. My future dream is to start my own factory in the city and provide employment for youngsters who are suffering without a job. Youngsters should not be made to sit at home. They should be motivated to think outside the box and come up with different ideas to put their talents into use.
