A Harishankar (28), Lecturer
When I completed BE Computer Science, the IT industry was in a downward trend. So, I changed my career path and decided to take up teaching. I joined ME. Even after completing ME, securing a job was difficult and if I ever found a job, the pay was low. Initially, I started my career in a private college. But I wanted to join a government engineering college. Hoping that I would get permanent employment, I joined a government engineering college three years ago on consolidated payroll. Even after three years, my post was not made permanent.
Apart from the lack of job security, lecturers working in consolidated pay would not get salary for the months April, May and June, when the exams and semester holidays occur. It is very difficult during those months and thought of joining a private college occurred to me. I know that job at private colleges not permanent, and pay is not so high. Still, I joined a private college. Now, at least I can earn every month. However, I have to commute more than 60 Kilometres a day to reach the college and return home. But I am happy to teach others what I have learned. PhD has become a necessary qualification to continue in the teaching job. I am trying to take a PhD now. My father was running a tea stall in my native. He has closed the shop and now he works as a bus conductor.
