My native is Tiruchendur and I came to Chennai in 2000. I shifted to Chennai after agriculture failed in my hometown. We had a palm grove and could not continue maintaining since monsoon failed. My cousin and his family moved to the city around 40 years ago to set up a tea stall. I joined my cousin.
When I first set up a tea stall, patronage was huge as many employees of nearby offices came to our stall for having tea. Now, due to induction and coffee making machines, we are losing patronage. Location is the major aspect for starting a tea stall.
Till now, many tea stalls functioning in prime locations are doing good business. I only make around Rs 400 to 500 per day which is very less. I have two children, a son and a daughter, who are studying Class 10 and Class 12 respectively. I do not want to compel them to study any specific course. I want to give them freedom of choosing their own career.
I am able to visit my native place only during relatives’ function and local festival. I have to keep my stall open all the time in order to earn. I should also have to think twice before I take a leave.
