I came to Chennai from Tirunelveli in search of employment around 28 years ago and started working in a tea shop in Nungambakkam. I started working at the age of 18 to support my family. I am not educated. I was earning only Rs 150 a month when I started working, whereas now I earn more than Rs 600 a day. My family includes my wife and two sons.
They live in my native and I stay in a rented house in KK Nagar in the city. My children are going to school as I want them to earn better jobs and not suffer like me. One of my sons is in Class 5 and the second one is Class 3. I am happy that I am able to afford their education. I visit them once in six months and send them money every month. Though the city and the people have been really welcoming, I had to struggle during the cyclone as my shop was damaged and we could not fix it for many days. I also plan to bring my family to the city but I want my children to grow older so that they can easily adjust to the surroundings of the city. The atmosphere in the city and my native is very different due to the rate of development. Transportation system needs to be developed in the rural areas in Tamil Nadu.
