S Kamala (62), Flower seller
I am from Karaikudi and have been in Chennai for more than 40 years now. I came here with my husband after I got married. My husband used to work here as a watchman and I started selling flowers in my locality in Ekkaduthangal. I have two daughters and my son passed away a few years back. My children went to school but did not complete their higher education. Both my daughters are married now. Now I am alone, but I am self-dependent and I earn about Rs 200-300 daily. I get flowers from Koyambedu and sell it in Ambal Nagar. The city has changed over the years and the price of flowers have also increased. The city has advanced and now life has become easier. However, all the benefits of advancements are only for the rich and not the poor. The government should help poor people in the city so that there are more employment opportunities and even poor children can study.
