After serving for eight years as a member of the Telecom Advisory Committee in Chennai, Sathiabalan, who is an unorganised worker by profession, is still fighting for the welfare of BSNL and its customers. “I developed some official contacts when I served in the committee.
After my tenure, I continued addressing the issues faced by the customers using my contacts as some employees are being lethargic towards their work,” he said. Sathiabalan added that a letter from him had saved crore of rupees for the public sector unit when he was a member. “The BSNL officials were using movie songs as their caller tune and this cost much to the BSNL.
I wrote a letter to Delhi to mandate BSNL promo music and the management heeded in a month.” Recently, he had helped some residents of Purasaiwakkam to get BSNL Broadband connection after some local officials refused to give connection citing lack of feasibility. “Whenever I receive information about misappropriation in the BSNL, I will unearth the corruption and make sure the perpetrators are trailed. Recently, I found out a cable theft in my area and filed a complaint with the vigilance department.
The investigation is underway. A few years ago, I made the police file FIR against three corrupt employees,” he added. Apart from helping telecom customers in getting their problems sorted out, Sathiabalan, who himself employed in the unorganised sector, has been guiding the employees of the sector to receive benefits from government welfare funds and schemes. However, Sathiabalan’s selfless service to the society has garnered opposition in his family. “Even my wife does not encourage me. But I am satisfied that I am helping people in some ways,” he said.
