The reason behind this came to light after this reporter spoke to a project director who was designated to carry out the works without any hiccups. He and his team narrated their struggles towards ensuring that high quality of river sand is utilised for construction purposes.
The decision to import sand was taken to curb illegal sand mining and save the environment. Also, an
authority promised that this exercise would be continuing regularly at high frequency. He also highlighted that of late, the instances of illegal sand mining have declined significantly.
That’s when this scribe, out of sheer curiosity enquired why such an important project is being kept away from the limelight.
To this project director answered sheepishly, “We don’t want more people to know about it. All our orders are received via our official website. Our site will crash if a lot of users try to access it because our software is not equipped to handle multiple requests. That’s also why we open the online booking order without announcing the date and time of auction.”
Shocked, this reporter wondered if it made sense to introduce a project for the benefit of the environment and then to keep it under wraps.
