I came to the city looking for a job in 1989. I came here with a lot of dreams and took up a job as a car driver. Soon, I found a job as a van driver in a private travel agency, which was witnessing a boom with the advent of mobile phones in the country. After gaining adequate experience, I started driving tourists to various places, including Tirupathi and Mysore. A businessman from Malaysia, impressed by my work ethics, invited me to Malaysia to work there. But somehow it failed to materialise.
Again, drivers who were dependent on private operators lost their jobs while a few experienced dwindling incomes owing to the advent of the internet and online booking. Then, I found a job as a share auto driver in 2007.
My life took a 360 degree turn when I sustained a massive heart attack at the wheel in 2012. I was heading towards LIC Shanthi when it happened. It was hard times of my life. In a few months, I developed intestine problems due to overdosage of drugs. This complicated my health condition further
The whole family, including my two daughters, struggled a lot then. Based on my life experience, I always emphasise on the importance of education. Now, my daughters are doing their graduation. I Hope that they will find a better life and a good income. Now, I am comfortable and I run a decent life. I pay a rent of Rs 700 every day, which is excluding fuel expenses. My only concern is that the government should regulate the existing share autos in the city and reduce the competition in this field. Everyone should face life with hope and self-confidence for a good life.
