Dealing with protests by political parties is a routine affair for police officers in the city where they are dispatched to ensure that nothing goes out of hand. One such routine protest, however, almost steered out of control after a young IPS officer accidently hit one of the protestors.
But, the situation became tense after negotiations between Thirunavakarasar and a deputy commissioner of police turned into a heated exchange. Congress cadres, who are usually much easier to handle, became restless when the deputy commissioner ended up swatting the leader’s hand during the verbal exchange.
The situation grew increasingly worse with the traffic piling outside Shastri Bhavan in Haddows Road, where the CBI office was located.
Finally, the situation was defused by a subordinate of the deputy commissioner who put himself between his officer and the Congress leader. Thankfully, Thirunavakarasar too, did his best to pacify his supporters.
A timely action by the junior officer saved the day. But perhaps young IPS officers can learn a lesson or two on diplomacy as in most situations, it is better to be diplomatic than use muscle power when dealing with problems in public spaces.
