Why do electric vehicles in India have a slow start?
Awareness about the use of electric vehicles has been spread in India for almost a decade now, but roads in India is rugged, which increases the maintenance of the EVs. Another factor is the setting up of charging points for the EV vehicles, which is very challenging for the government and the industries.
Where are other countries when we compare it with India in regard to electric vehicles?
Countries like USA, Germany and Japan are far ahead of us and the primary reason is the adaptation of infrastructure and the growing concern of global warming. India is relying on providing subsidies to encourage the usage of EVs whereas a stringent government policy will aid in catching up with the leading countries.
How long will it take for India to totally shift to EVs? If successfully done, how long will it take for us to improve the air quality index?
Our country is developing faster in a lot of segments than we think. Big companies like Tata and startups like Nappinnai are also thriving to create awareness by penetrating the mobility segment as we speak. At this rate, the total shift to EVs will take more than a decade. Shifting to EV will definitely help in improving the air quality index but we should take the initiative to primarily reduce the usage of diesel vehicles.
