“The Chennai Corporation has demolished old drains on the street and constructing new drains under construction of missing links project. But, during the works, sewage water entered the drain. Due to this, strong stench is emanating from the drain,” a shop owner on Vanniyar Street said.
Meanwhile, M Vishnupriya, a resident of Sriramapuram said that the street is one of the major interior roads in the locality and connects Kodambakkam, Periyar Pathai and Nelson Manickam Road. “The works, that have been carried out during the rains irks the motorists. During the peak hours, traffic on the stretch almost chokes,” she added.
Adding to the woes, the Chennai Corporation is yet to set up inlets to make way for the rainwater to enter the drains. This will lead to water stagnation during a heavy downpour. “Even if the Corporation completes and closes the drains, it is of no use unless the officials identify and unplug illegal sewage connections in stormwater drains. Owners of eateries let their wastes from inlets instead of establishing pipe connections. The Corporation should take actions against such persons,” Vishnupriya urged.
When contacted, a Chennai Corporation official said that the missing link works would be done only on a small stretch and the works are nearly completed. “In a day or two, the new drain will be covered. Even though the monsoon has begun in the state, all the works will be completed before heavy rains,” the official said.
Explaining the actions taken against the illegal sewage connections, the official said, “We have found a few illegal connections in the area and unplugged them apart from issuing warnings to shop owners. Mostly hotels and tea shops let the sewage into the drains. Despite unplugging the illegal connections, still, sewage water is entering the stormwater drains. We could not find the illegal connections and we are trying to identify the source. Illegal connections will be unplugged once they are found.”
However, the residents raised concerns over uncompleted works and urged the civic body to take steps to prevent outbreak of any diseases.
