I am a resident of Chintadripet. I earn a bare minimum salary and manage to take care of my grandmother. I hope to be able to see a day when I can earn more money. I have been working with a company that sells garden plants and my job has been to deliver the plants to the clients. I have been doing this for the past two years, besides another job at a company that handles spare parts for tractors. As I had been having a difficult time with the spare part company, I took up this job to stay distracted from the problems I face. With a salary of Rs 100 to 200 a day from the garden shop and a very small amount from the spare parts company at the end of the month, my grandmother and I have been managing to survive. My wife and I faced differences and we separated. The money I earn can only meet my daily needs in terms of meals and tea. The rest of the money is mostly used to take care of my grandmother’s medication. Besides, there are times when I have a drink or two. Despite realising that it would make a hole in our pockets, I am unable to let go of the urge and tend to drink alcohol. I take up whatever work that comes my way. However, I fear the day we run short of money and I need to take a loan.
