A Anandhi (40), Conservancy worker
I was working with an apparel exports firm as a helper and then joined the private firm that overtook conservancy works seven years ago. I joined this job believing that I will get a permanent job in Chennai Corporation, but the reality is otherwise.
I am now given a tricycle for door-to-door garbage collection. I have two sons and the elder one got married and is living separately. I am now living with my younger son and my husband, who is doing centring works but hardly gets any job.
My younger son refused to join college after Class 12 and is now searching for a job. I have been insisting on him joining college for a better future. When I first joined Chennai Corporation as a contract worker, I was given Rs 4,500 per month and now I am getting Rs 8,000.
But permanent staff are earning close to Rs 20,000 per month for the same work we do. To lead a better life, one should have some properties to inherit or be educated. My son is reluctant to understand that fact. We reside at Namachivayapuram in Choolaimedu.
