What was the idea behind organising the event?
Conservancy workers are working day in and day out to keep our city clean. It is important to thank them for their services. So we at Enhanced Community Opportunities (ECO) Kitchen decided to honour them. Also, the event was organised to create awareness and sensitise citizens to take responsibility for a cleaner Chennai. We have also decided to advocate and promote the dignity of the conservancy workers. We have organised an event for this marking the Daan Utsav festival that is being celebrated across the country from October 2 to October 8.
How many workers were felicitated?
We selected nine locations like community halls and schools simultaneously in Ambattur, Anna Nagar and Adyar, where the workers were asked to gather. Nearly 5,500 workers were felicitated on that day. Apart from our volunteers, more than 500 students from colleges and schools had volunteered to distribute medals.
Why did you select Gandhi Jayanti to felicitate the workers?
October 2 was selected mainly due to the Daan Utsav. Apart from this, the day was Swachh Day and the day also fell on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Our main effort is to sensitise city residents on keeping the city clean.
