“They have covered an entire area which was earlier sandy on its surface with concrete. Now, people have begun to park their two-wheelers there. They are building a garden and a wall is coming up as well. These are blocking the view of the beach. We were not consulted before the works began.”
He added that though the Greater Chennai Corporation officials were approached with a feedback, there has been very little response. “In fact, they told us they will hear our grievances two weeks ago. Some officials turned up and we are not sure if they are going to take any steps.”
V Chandrasekhar, President, Senior Citizens Group Of Besant Nagar and Mylapore (SCGOBNM), added that the parameters considered for the beautification in the rest of the areas cannot be applied in Besant Nagar. “This is a place where a many people converges all through the year, from Velankanni Church Festival to Ganesh Chathurthi. We don’t have footpaths on 3rd Avenue and many of us, especially women and children, suffer along with senior citizens. What is the logic behind building concrete surfaces on the beach which is of little use? It only serves the purpose of contractors, not the people who use it. They have ignored the needs of the residents here for a while now,” he said.
A source from Zone 13 of Corporation admitted that residents have had issues with the beautification work. However, the source added, “They have approached us with complaints and suggestions. But it is only a section of residents. On the whole, the residents have welcomed the changes being made.”
