In the Corporation premises – right in the front-facing courtyard of Ripon Building – a covered parking space has been created, but only for the top few officials such as the Commissioner and the deputy commissioners, to park their vehicles. For the rest, every bit of the outdoor space has doubled into a parking area for cars and bikes – by those visiting the premises or working there. There is also an underground parking lot, mainly used for spill-overs. The official car is a given for only top-rung bureaucrat. This scribe, however, was pleasantly surprised to find a top Corporation official choosing to use the public transport systems and the ride-sharing apps – for the daily commute. According to the official, it serves the dual purpose of beating traffic reaching the destination faster and examining the lapses in the system, to introduce solutions to encourage more people to use the public transport system, eventually.
The official in question is setting a precedent for those around – walk the talk, and make the city better, by keeping your ears close to the ground realities. Surely, a step to be lauded and encouraged. Maybe the other officials too should take a leaf and ditch their cars, if not forever – at least one day a week? While car-free Sundays have been directed at the public to entice them to ditch their vehicles at least for a day, anyone up for a car-free workday for our bureaucrats?
