I love dogs and want to have one as a pet. I have also learnt that dogs are man’s best friend. But not these which live on my street in Velachery. I live off Tansi Nagar near Annanagar IV Main Road. Every time I see someone taking their dog for a walk, I feel sad that I am not able to do it. But it’s too risky for me as my street is haunted by a pack of stray dogs.
A friend of mine boldly took the decision of buying a puppy. One fine morning, she put it on a leash and proudly took it out for a walk. But her happiness did not last long. As she was nearing the apartment, a stray dog suddenly jumped on the helpless puppy frightening it for life. It ran into the apartment for cover and refused to leave the house for a walk the next day. They had to sell it off ultimately.
My parents and many in the neighbourhood did file a complaint to corporation officials to clear the street off these strays, but in vain. They lurk in packs on street corners. They roam freely, feast on garbage and chase residents all through the day. Many on our street are scared to venture out after dark due to this menace. It is not just the pedestrians who are scared but motorists too.
They run behind cars and chase the motorists who are forced to drive at high speed to escape these animals.
It’s a different story altogether for joggers and walkers. While joggers are forced to carry, bamboo sticks or break a long one from a leaning tree, the walkers fill theirs pockets with stones to ward off the canines.
