During a flight journey in September 2019, Tamil rapper Arivu and popular YouTuber Madan Gowri were discussing how today’s tech-savvy generation is not concerned about the social issues happening around them.
“The advancement in technology is changing every minute and we are welcoming and easily adapting to them without any delay. But when it comes to religion and caste, there is still a division in society.
In the song, Monkeys With 5G, we are highlighting this contrast. I wrote the lyrics, and just before the lockdown, Madan and I shot the video,” says Arivu.
The song that is a mix of poetry and rap also speaks about how social media has taken over our lives. “The lines Monkeys with 5G, now follow me on IG (Instagram), but moolaikkul jaathi athu mutthi pona viyaathi... refers to how much ever we are advanced technologically, caste remains a severe disease for many. Today’s generation doesn’t shy away from sharing their daily activities on social media. But when it comes to topics like religion and caste, they think thrice before talking about it. The youngsters should come forward and question about casteism that’s strongly present in the country. Though we have presented the song in a satirical, fun manner, I wanted youngsters to start a discussion on the issue and drive caste away from us,” the rapper tells us.
Arivu, who created a stir with his political album Therukural, loves to create songs that convey socially relevant messages and ideas. “Our plan was to shoot the song wearing the monkey mask. But when one of our friends introduced us to the animoji feature in the iPhone, we thought of trying it. Our song is the first Indian song to be shot completely with iPhone’s animoji feature,” Arivu says proudly.
