While fringe elements and self-appointed custodians of Tamil culture continue to criticise the reality show Bigg Boss, the show seems to be growing from strength to strength on social media, if the sheer number of memes around it that are going viral are anything to go by.

Chennai:

With every passing day of the show that went on air on June 25, there are fan groups emerging and indulging in social media wars.
The show has also provided enough fodder for trolls. Within less than three weeks of the show, more than 20 Facebook meme and troll pages, specially dedicated to the show, have emerged — Bigg Boss Paridhabangal, Bigg Boss Memes, Bigg Boss Trolls, Bigg Boss Attakasa, Bigg Boss Trolls Tamil, Troll Big Boss and so on.
Ashok P, a meme maker and college student, says, “I watch all the episodes, choose the visuals that are funny and then replay the video on the streaming channel to grab the screenshots. There is so much happening on the show that we make 10-30 memes every day. We get a good response for the memes we create about Oviya, Julie and Harathi.”

Memes apart, someone had even edited contestant Gayathri Raghuram’s Wikipedia page. In the choreographer’s occupation section, ‘Julie-hater’ is one of the mentions. It was removed later. Some even got emotional.
During the Bharini episode, Al Rufian, a musician, posted, “Feeling so bad for Bharani! There are so many Bharanis in this industry! That’s how this industry behaves to outsiders. I have been in the place of Bharani so many times. I have faced many Julies, Gayathris, Harathis and Snehans.”
The popularity of these memes on social media is such that even people who don’t watch the show are aware of its daily progress. Some have also gone on to watching it regularly.
“I was not watching the show initially yet I could keep track of it through the memes. They were extremely funny and later I started watching the show to get the context. Now, I have started creating memes of my own,” says M Srinivas, a Visual Communications student.
Thala-Thalapathy fever in the air
After dressing up like popular characters of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth earlier in the week, Bigg Boss inmates were asked to reprise iconic roles of Ajith and Vijay on Thursday’s episode. The contestants were divided into two groups with one of them dressing up like Ajith’s character from Vedalam , while the other played Vijay’s career-defining role from Ghilli. The inmates then danced to a marathon of songs of the two actors. Later in the day, Snehan was seen going around the house warning every housemate including Namitha and Raiza of Julie’s admission of having a plan to eliminate every member. The contestants then played a game of musical chairs with a task to be performed after every round which also saw Aarar breaking eggs on Julie’s head, Namitha pouring a bucket of water on Raiza and Ganesh barking like a dog.
