Speaking at the inauguration of the two-day national conference CONEXGENLIB (Convection of Next Generation Libraries), Sengottaiyan said that each mobile library would visit two schools in a day and students would get access to a wide range of books.
Further in an attempt to encouraging reading habit and acquire general knowledge, one period would be devoted to library study in government schools, he informed. Conveying that there were 4,603 libraries in the state, he said that of these, 312 were permanent facilities and all of them would be digitised soon.
Similarly, the palm-leaf scripts would also be digitised in a step-by-step manner. As announced earlier, IAS academy would be set up in the headquarters of all the 32 districts.
Steps to provide video conferencing facilities were also under way, the Minister added.
Pointing out that Rs 26,932 crore was allotted for education sector and libraries last year, Sengottaiyan claimed that TN was the first state in the country to make such a huge allocation for education. In other things, he said Rs 5 crore was granted to Anna Centenary Library and Rs 6 crore was sanctioned for Tamizh Sangam in Madurai.
The theme of the conference is Global Trends and Innovations in Libraries and Information Centres. The conclave is aimed at bringing professionals together and share their experience and expertise. This initiative would help in improving the public libraries to international standards with latest technology.
The participants would also discuss ways and means to equip library professionals of how to attract the next generation to libraries.
