Stray dog menace is not new to streets of Chennai. The problem is different in different places. In some areas, people are chased, in some they bark throughout the night and in some places they do not create a nuisance. But things are not that simple in my neighbourhood, Mugalivakkam.
The canines actually strike terror in our hearts. Children, especially are scared to even ride their bicycles to school. I remember the day when my brother got ready to attend the sports day celebrations at school. As he opened the front gate, he was knocked down by a stray dog.
It pounced on him and before he could react, bit him. Though he tried shooing it away, the dog refused to leave. By the time my parents came to his rescue, the dog had bit my brother in several places.
This was followed by regular visits to the medical centre for a scheduled set of injections. It is a year now but still my brother panics at the sight of a stray dog. Though we filed several complaints to civic authorities to address the problem, they hardly did anything. Every now and then a van would go around the area to catch the dogs. Surprisingly, every time the van comes, the dogs are nowhere in sight. Recently, our domestic helper and her eight-year-old son were bit by the stray dogs in our street. She was forced to shell out a lot of money on injections and medicines. These dogs are infected with some kind of disease and they have patches all over their body. They are turning violent by the day. They snarl, bark at strangers and howl at night.
Nowaday my friends and I have stopped cycling in our nice locality as we are scared of these dogs. They scare people, chase pedestrians and cyclists and bark at 2 wheeler riders.
My welfare association members say that municipality does not attend to these issues for reasons unknown. In some way if the government can create animal shelters and adoption methods the streets can be turned much safer and the animals too will not be hurt.
